ESPDIC (Esperanto-English Dictionary)
Latest ESPDIC files
The purpose of the ESPDIC project is to create an electronic
Esperanto-English dictionary in the form of a single Unicode (UTF8) text file
with the following format :
"Esperanto : English"
(i.e. Esperanto entry, space, colon, space, English definition - one entry per line). In some cases, a semicolon is used to show different definitions for
Esperanto homonyms, e.g. "kajo : conjunction; quay, wharf". This simple
formatting is designed to facilitate the integration of ESPDIC into other applications (which is highly encouraged).
In order to encourage its use in the Esperanto community, ESPDIC (Esperanto English

Based on the experiences I had with the CEDICT (Chinese-English Dictionary) project I started in the late 1990s, I decided to do something similar for Esperanto. The core of this dictionary was made up of vocabulary
lists I created from various Esperanto textbooks as well as word lists I found on the Internet. The dictionary was then augmented by vocabulary lists I made from reading both print and online sources. In the early part of 2011 I believed
that the dictionary had reached a sufficient size (about 30,000 entries) and I went through the dictionary from start to finish trying to catch the most obvious errors, formatting issues, etc. Any remaining errors or issues (and I'm sure there will always be some) are of course my own responsibility.
Many thanks to our contributors to date : Brian Scott Carpenter, Michael Everson, Lee Miller, Erik Vandenburg
